The Cathedral (Santiago de Compostela)

Description

For over a millennium, the cathedral has served as the traditional end of the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago) as the burial place of St James the Great. According to legend, the tomb of the apostle was lost for centuries. In the 9th century, a local hermit named Pelayo saw mysterious, glowing lights hovering over a forest. He followed the lights, which led him to the long-forgotten tomb. The city’s name is even said to come from the Latin Campus Stellae, meaning “Field of the Star.”
