Völkerschlachtdenkmal (Leipzig)

Description

The Monument to the Battle of the Nations (Völkerschlachtdenkmal) in Leipzig, Germany, is the tallest war monument in Europe, standing at a massive 91 meters (299 feet) tall. The 1813 Battle of Nations near Leipzig was the largest armed conflict in Europe before WW1 with close to 100,000 soldiers killed or wounded on the battlefield. Now, 16 massive, 12-meter-tall stone guardians (Totenwächter) keep eternal watch over fallen soldiers., while 12 giant knights stand guard outside the dome. The large water basin (called Lake of Tears) in front of the monument creates an optical reflection forming a giant cross.
